Answer |
| Why can't I wear deodorant during a mammogram? |
Some of the ingredients used in deodorants may appear on the
mammogram film and could be misinterpreted as "microcalcifications",
which are small deposits of calcium in the breast that can be
detected by mammography. Microcalcifications are common in healthy
breasts, but some microcalcification patterns are suggestive
of breast cancer. |
| This is my first mammogram, will it hurt? |
The mammogram shouldn't hurt, but may be uncomfortable due
to the compression, which will only last a few seconds and is
necessary to achieve accurate results. |
| What is the purpose of compression? |
The purpose of compression is to separate overlaying structures,
as well as reduce the dose of radiation. |
| How should I dress the day of my mammogram? |
You will need to undress from the waist up during the mammogram,
so it will be more convenient for you to wear a two-piece outfit
to your appointment. |
| Does it matter what time of the month I schedule my mammogram?
|
You should try to schedule your mammogram for shortly after
your period. Since many women experience discomfort in the week
leading up to their periods, having your breasts compressed
for the exam may increase that discomfort |
| Will a female perform the exam? |
In most facilities, the technologists are women; however,
if the technologist is a male, he is a highly trained medical
professional and a MQSA certified mammographer. |
| How long will the mammogram take? |
In most cases, a screening exam takes about 30 minutes from
the time of arrival to completion of the exam. |
| Should I be worried about the radiation exposure? |
The radiation exposure during a mammogram is less than that
received by sitting on the beach all day in bright sunshine. |
